Stand by (me)

My summer card

Buone vacanze a tutti!

Dear July
you are almost gone, and you are past that I don't even noticed. It may be March... But we are now in August, the Olympics are here.
Last year I was in a privileged condition of extra long vacation while I was changing my residence and my work... while this year, for the first time in my life, I won't be on the beach on mid-August, as I'm going to work (yes, it's not holiday in UK... it takes a little time to get over it)
But August will be the same an holiday period, a bit in Italy and a bit, as I said, maybe in Cornwall... Therefore, this will be the last post before the Atelier Buffo, that's actually me, goes on holiday.
It  has been a year of blogging and of life in London, everything new and very fast... it should be trivial to say, but it doesn't seem to me! If there weren't the memories of the last summer, it would seem to me to be here much longer and that the blog has always been with me.

But now a little rest is due... see you in September ... Happy holidays to all!

...........................

Buona lettura estiva...
I leave a few links to online and free magazines... what could better? Enjoy...

L'unico frutto dell'amor...

Along with pizza, ice cream is perhaps the only food which I never get tired. I could eat more and more, preferably the creams, in summer as in winter time.
I can find ice cream in London, and it's fine, but it costs a fortune! I would say that the giant cups, the ones that you have for a summer lunch in Italy, are a vague memory... (just for a little more!)

Home made Ice Cream

So you can imagine my face when I read this post: the magic of frozen fruit... (and shake)
Ice cream problem solved excellently against UK, as the bananas are the cheapest fruit!
Chiara is amazing and she explains how to very well, so I don't want to add more.

Coconut ice cream

Peach ice cream

My experiments are not as nice as hers, but I assure you they were delicious. Now I just have to improve... and of course I have a freezer drawer now dedicated to the banana!
Maybe I've reinvented the wheel, but I didn't know this process... I've just discovered a new world, you can make endless flavours of HOME MADE ICE CREAM (I'm not particularly obsessed by diet and healthy food, but in addition to being easy and quick, this ice cream is absolutely perfect!)

Make up session

When I tell of things I do here, I always seem to start a joke, like: "We are an Italian, an Englishman and a Pole ..."
But it happens exactly like in the jokes, you know people from all over the world and with some of them it comes out something interesting. It a mix of cultures, passion, professionalism and personalities.
So, from a chat the idea of an alternative day, a make up session.

Kasia is a make-up artist who is building her portfolio, and she needed guinea pigs, Helen and me (I don't say models not for lack of esteem in her work, but for my total inability and unnaturalness in front of the camera) and a photographer (A.).

We had fun... Helen and I have now some nice portraits (I'm also motivated to improve my make up skills... what a difference!)
Kasia is very good and has done wonders since intelligently Helen and I had a night out!
I also learned something about the nuances of the English language: INTERESTING used to describe a taste is not nice, but just a polite way to say disgusting (referring to the tea I've prepared, what a humiliation... Next time I will remember that earl grey does not admit milk! Maybe that's obvious to some, but not for me since I don't drink or tea or milk, neither together)

Club neon

- risparmio in creme protettive, doposole, scrub, olio...
altro proprio non mi viene in mente...

The tan is no longer a problem, I've resigned myself.
Again, I try desperately to find the positives:
- if you start, then becomes a job and you have to punch as soon as it's sunny and you are have an half-hour free
- is a tragedy when it starts to go away
- you are in competition with the others
- if everyone around you is tanned, you ashamed to be a ghost
- with all the moles I have my dermatologist will be happy for me
- I don' have anymore problem with signs of different bikinis, bra straps etc etc.
- I'm saving in creams, after sun, scrub, oil...
It's really to find something else...

And in the meantime I'm looking for other sources of energy, and thankfully some colors are everywhere this summer...
Waiting for a good dose of sunshine and a drip of salt water for my psychological wellness I'm try to find comfort in NEON colours, starting from the jellyfish chandelier at the V&A Museum and the logo of the Olympics that have invaded London:

PS: famous last words. I've prepared this post last week, then yesterday summer has finally arrived. As I don't practise what I preach, I spent the afternoon storing sunlight, with the result that my skin is now exactly the colour of this post, that is neon pink!

Secret gardens (from Hammersmith to Chiswick)

There's a beautiful walk in the West London where I live, far from the tourist routes.
Hammersmith is not certainly a picturesque place, King Street is not a great beauty, but it 's really comfortable living there near several charity shop and chains like Primark, Poundland and TKmaxx (with a huge home department)... but above all, the bank of the river is an excellent starting point for a pleasant walk through some little treasures.

Keeping the Thames on the left, and the beautiful Hammersmith bridge behind you, start to walk...

You will find boats like houses, pretty gardens, beautiful facades, pubs where to have a nice break (they're all cute, but my favorite is the Dove, with a terrace on the water and the interiors from the past century), and the Kelmscott House, home of the William Morris Society.

Then you will find the Fuller's brewery, where the London Pride beer and many others are produced, which also organizes guided tours, you can imagine... English people + tour + tasting beer ...
Now you are in Chiswick, a lovely residential area, there will seem not to be even in London.

Then the Chiswick Pier and a huge ground crowded at the weekends.
At this point you have gone along the Thames and you can choose to cross the bridge and visit the nice Barnes or to go back maybe through the center of Chiswick, in Chiswick High Road dotted with pretty shops...
If you are hungry... and you miss the pizza (it happens to me, it's one of the few flavours I really miss) stop at Franco Manca, the most close to the Italian taste!
Or go ahead to Lola & Simon, if you want to have a nice brunch in a lovely place often crowded with local young people and families.

WANTED: Summer

1. Zara Home
2. Royal Copenaghen
3. Cole & Son Great Wave Wallpaper
4. Petit Bateau

"What do you think if..."
When A. begins a sentence with this premise I'm alarmed, it means he is changing his mind about something already decided, or he's telling me something that would probably drive me mad.

Fortunately it was the first thing... let me tell you shortly: our holiday plans in Cornwall are tottering. I am surprised that it's not due to me, but I cannot blame him...
The cause is just this terrible summer, this notstop rain, the desire to go out with a shirt and to forget all the rest, the sweater, the jacket, the umbrella, the scarf, maybe even another pair of shoes.
Fortunately we haven't booked anything and we have time... so I want to even trust the English weather... then we will see, maybe at the last minute we will deviate to a Greek island!

5. John Lewis wallpaper
6. Toms: try these slippers and you will find out why they are so popular
7. Bluebellgray cushion and fabric

a righe o a fiori, o insieme
come le case al mare
come le maioliche mediterranee
come le onde

Meanwhile I'm dreaming the summer and going around with sandals and a light dress... What makes summer more than the white and the blue?
striped or floral, or together
like the sea houses
as the Mediterranean tiles
as the waves

My precious

Once Sunday was the most dull day of the week... there are no expectations for the weekend like on Friday and Saturday, and it is a bit gloomy, maybe because the week is finishing or maybe because you know that a new working week is coming.
On Sunday people travel and say goodbye to family, stations and airports are busy, but the shops are closed, there's only crap on TV... etc. etc..
Now, instead Sunday is my favorite day! How many things you can do in London on Sunday? One of my favorites, as you know, are the flea markets.
So last Sunday we went there with a couple of friends visiting us from Italy, and with Elizabeth (the Mini car, she's also vintage): challenging the possible bad weather we took them to the less tourist London.
We all bought something, A. and me without limits (the boot of the car is now much better than the Vespa... but do not worry, we had a limited budget), our friends with some limitations but with satisfaction (Ryanair dictates!)

Ecco il bottino / Here's my loot

Royal wedding mugs
Coffee cups

A tribute to the other real couples, I was missing them in my kitsch collection, and two coffee cups (it's not easy to find pretty ones here)

No, non ho pianto, NO NO! Pero' vediamo i lati positivi, posso ricominciare a collezionare.
I didn't tell you that a few weeks ago the kitchen cupboard fell down and I found almost all my carefully collected pottery shattered? It has been just a light inconvenience lasted a week, luckily not caused by excessive load, but by a clogged pipe of my neighbor, which has transformed the wall into a sponge... I did not cry, didn't I? But the sunny side is that I can start collecting new stuff.

Scalloped old mirror
A mirror: I love these old art deco shaped mirrors, unframed and scalloped edged to hang by a chain, this is my second one.

And finally... I'm the happiest girl, I found a treasure!!

A stool (?) full of useful accessories and little tools for sewing, all strictly very old... look at the packaging.
It 's in very good condition, the legs are perfect, but I don't really like the the upholstery and I'm quite sure it would be my next project!

Dressed up garden table

My mum enjoys sewing, that's not a news (have a look herehereherehere and here)... what surprises me and sounds a little strange to me is that, after years of total white, she has started using colour, a lot of!
Since I was still at home, please don't mention any changes far from the neutral colours, I remember I have been allowed to paint a red wall of my room after my graduation.
And now she wonders me with orange, red, pink... welcome color!

Here is how she has prepared the garden table for the summer, wrapping a satin pink ribbon through the iron top:

Details

This table has been with us forever, it is definitely older than me and maybe than my mum. I still remember it in white in the country, then grey in the town's garden... and now it is pink for the summer 2012.
Well done mummy, I love it!

Sole cuore amore (Sicilia)

Vi ho detto dove andiamo in vacanza?

I guess you will be bored of London... to tell the truth me too!
Did I tell you where we are planning to go on holiday? With a bit of masochism we have decided for...  the Cornwall!
I want to visit this country, and I'm very curious to see the English countryside.
I have seen very little, except some cities, which I had already visited.
So I'm excited, a relaxing holiday with our powerful car!
But... I already know that for one point, I'll regret this choice during the next months. Any body and any spirit, especially mine,  needs a little of sun and sea, possibly very hot!
We will see... Meanwhile I am heartened by the memories of Sicily.

Getting ready for Ascot

Down with the sobriety! I know this may sound  provocative since the historic period, but I assure you that the Italian situation has nothing to do...

I now I'm used to seeing and I'm not surprised of the wonderful creations, clips, headbands, hats, which are  everywhere, from the stalls of Portobello and Brick Lane to the most luxurious department store in London.
The hair accessories have a long tradition in the UK (see Royal Wedding and Ascot).
In Italy until a few years ago you were probably confined to the neuro if you came to a ceremony with your hair equipped with flowers and veils, which now are accepted.
(For the record, I'm the official supplier / importer of feathers and hair  accessories, since I buy them even if I don't have any special occasion planned... you never know, they may be useful for a  costume party!)
Girlfriends, does it remind you of anything?? A hen party long weekend looking for the wedding accessories... a year ago... I miss you!

There are too many inputs around me... I must experiment everything... so this time I created my very simple hair accessory:

Floral hairband

a bit Maracaibo, a bit grandmother's shower cap style... it's for sure an exaggeration, but I really enjoyed it! I know that it will be the first of a series...
